Hair Me: A Journey Through the Rich Tapestry of Black Hair

Synopsis

Hair Me is a captivating stage play by Leslie Saint-Julien that takes audiences on an evocative journey through the history and culture of Black hair, from its origins in Africa to its evolution in the modern day. Through a vibrant fusion of monologues, poetry, dialogue, and interactive moments, the play dives deep into the cultural, symbolic, and spiritual significance of Black hair.

The story begins with the rhythmic pulse of the Haitian folklore dance, Yanvalou, filling the stage with the energy of drums, music, and rich visuals. Drawing from her Haitian heritage, Leslie weaves a series of intimate and authentic narratives that bring to life the diverse hairstyles that have adorned Black individuals throughout history. Each hairstyle takes on its own voice, speaking to the truths of its creation and cultural relevance.

From the resilience inherent in natural textures to the societal pressures to conform, Hair Me fearlessly examines the triumphs and struggles faced by Black individuals in navigating their identities. Through humor, emotion, and heartfelt reflection, the play explores the often painful choices surrounding acceptance and beauty standards.

With the collaboration of a master hairstylist, every style showcased on stage becomes a living homage to the artistry and beauty of Black hair. As the audience is immersed in this multilayered experience, they are invited to rethink societal norms and appreciate the complexity of Black identity.

When the final curtain falls, Hair Me leaves an indelible mark—an echo of laughter, tears, and shared empathy. More than just a theatrical production, it is an educational and emotional revelation, celebrating the diversity and strength embodied in every strand of Black hair.

Hair it loud and clear—live on stage!
